butterflies, crafts, good idea at the time, how to, living with parents, organization, post-grad, update
Since I promised myself (and the bloogosphere) that I would post updates about my decree, I figured now would be as good a time as any. It’s almost been a week, and I haven’t done much. But, I will say that while I now have concrete goals, they are hard for me to manage while my physical space is disorganized. So I’ve spent the last few days remedying that.
After graduation from college, I decided to quit my job, vacation in England for three weeks, and move back home with my parents. It seemed like a good idea at the time. My reasoning? I was working as a server at a restaurant, which paid well, but it was stressful and kept me from doing something in my artistic field. While my intentions may have been good, it has now been just over a year and I have nothing to show for it. Moving back “home” stunted my independence and motivation and put me back about 10 years. Meaning I feel like I’m 16 again. Not good. I should have kept my job, or at least gotten a different, less stressful job right after graduation and stayed in an apartment. I’d at least have all of my savings still. And my sanity.
But back to my update. As I am back with my parents, I am back in my old room with my old stuff and all the clutter that comes with it. No longer does my stuff surround me in boxes and bags and suitcases, but my past. And I cannot think or move forward until it is safely given away, thrown out, or put into storage. So that’s what I’ve been doing: Going through everything and putting it into boxes labeled “Donate/Sell”, “Recycle”, “Trash”, “Storage” and “Keep”. The Recycling overflows rather quickly since I like to keep all my old notebooks from school; but as the years pass, I no longer feel attached to those random history notes on the rise and fall of the Russian Empire. Interesting info, but now that there’s this thing call the Internet, I’m pretty sure I’ll be fine without it.
So my room is half-way useable for my purposes. My desk needs to be cleared so I can do my craft projects and artwork, and my floor needs to be cleared so I can walk. (Though my training to become an agile feline ninja is going swimmingly!)
Speaking of crafts, my boyfriend found me a fun project. I’ll have to add it to my long list, but it looks so fun, I had to share it with you all. It’s How To Make Wind Up Paper Butterflies from Youaremyfave.com. The actual tutorial, however, is by guest author Amelia of The Homebook. (Don’t hurt me WP for linking to your rival– eep!) They look so delicate, I can just imagine them fluttering up out of an envelope to make anyone’s day (Yes, they actually can fly)! If you do the project, please post pictures and let me know so I can live vicariously through you! Click on the previous link or on the picture to go to the tutorial. Also, if you can figure out exactly how to attach the rubberband, please please please let me know because her explanation didn’t quite do it for me. But otherwise, it is a great how-to that I cannot wait to try!
